The Salahaddin University

Salahaddin University, previously named University of Sulaimania, was
founded in 1968 in Sulaimania city in accordance with Law No. 143.  In
1981 the university was transferred to Hawler city and renamed 'University of Salahaddin'. Three colleges, the College of Science, the College of Agriculture, and the College of Engineering were originally establishment with the University. The College of Arts was added in 1971, the College of Management in 1975 and the College of Education in 1976. In view of the urgent need of the Kurdistan region in particular, the College of Medicine was added in 1977.

The Faculty of Science began with four departments: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology, the latter containing Zoology and Botany. The department of Geology was added in 1976.

The faculty of Agriculture began with the departments of Plant Production and Animal Production. Agronomy, Horticulture and Soil Science was added to the department of Plant Production, in 1974. Soil Science became an independent department in 1975 and in 1977 the
department of Plant Production gave way to an independent department of Agronomy and Horticulture. The department of Agriculture Extension became attached to the College of Agriculture and the Section of Food Science and Technology and Animal Husbandry were added to the department of Animal Production in 1974. In 1975 both the sections Food Science and Technology and Animal Husbandry became independent departments.

The faculty of Engineering began with the department of Civil Engineering. The department of Electrical Engineering was added in 1974.

The faculty of Arts began with the department of Kurdish studies
comprising of two branches: Kurdish Language and Literature, and
Economics. In 1975 the department of Sociology in Kurdish Studies and
the department of Economics and Management were established, the
latter becoming the nucleus for the foundation of the faculty of
Management in 1976. The department of Arabic Language was founded in
1976.

The faculty of Management comprises of two departments: the department
of Management with its two branches of Accounting and General
Management, and the department of Statistics.

The faculty of Education is comprised of two departments: the
department of Physics and Mathematics, and the department of Biology.

The faculty of Law and Politics was established in 1985, the College
of Dentistry was established in 1995.

To keep pace with the growth and development of the University, the
following Colleges were later added:

*  College of Physical Education      1998
*  College of Basic Education           2001
*  College of Sharia                         2002
*  College of Political Science          2002
*  College of Fine Arts                     2002

The University is currently undergoing vigorous expansion in all academic domains so as enhance its role in serving the local community and the country as whole in addition to providing quality education for students. At present, the University comprises twenty-two
faculties.

In addition to B.A. and B.Sc. degrees, the University grants the M.A., M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in various subjects and specializations.

Research equipment, instruments, materials, laboratories, books and research publications have been made available to students for applied and research purposes.

Salahaddin University - Hawler is the oldest and largest university in the region with a total intake of nearly 18,500 students. It is a member of the International Association of Universities.

The University is affiliated jwith the Council of Higher Education in the Ministerial Council of the Kurdistan Region.
