The University of Duhok

Before the establishment of University of Duhok in October 1992, the Ba’ath Party had a policy of denying Kurdish students admittance to Iraqi universities. The facilities at Salahaddin University in Erbil were insufficient to accommodate all Kurdish students wishing to enter the university and the economic situation made transportation between Erbil and Duhok difficult, especially in the winter season.

The parliament of Iraqi Kurdistan issued a decree to establish the University in Duhok city. The first colleges to be created at the university were the College of Medicine and the College of Agriculture. The Medical College had 48 students and the College of Agriculture had 166. Embargos imposed by the UN on Iraq, and the Iraqi Central Government embargo on Kurdistan, both contributed to poor economic conditions in Kurdistan. After these hard times passed, the University found itself in a position for advancement and expanded to eleven colleges, each with specialized departments.

The purpose of external relations and international cooperation is to pursue global recruitment of faculty and students, collaboration for international research, institutional alliances and consortia, student exchange programs, distant learning programs, executive education programs, and reciprocation of education technology.

The University of Duhok promotes cooperation as essential for the rapid exchange of worldwide information, global connectivity and the integration of international educational. The University wants to forge strong relations with distinguished and outstanding universities and scientific centers through bilateral agreements and exchange programs.

As an institution of higher learning the University of Duhok plans to reach the highest levels of scientific research and education. The university desires to educate the public and private sectors while conducting value added research. The university depends principally on assistance provided by the government but is considered an independent organization.
